Remains of the temple of Jupiter Serapis, at Pozzuoli
Hakewill, James, 1778-1843 (draftsman)
October 1816
1 drawing : graphite ; 14 x 21.5 cm.
This so-called temple of Jupiter Serapis is in fact a macellum or public market-hall, misnamed in the 1750 excavations from a statue of the Egyptian god Serapis found there. Hakewill's drawing catches the monument just before the construction of the mineral baths built over the macellum in 1816; it shows three columns fronting the apse and in the foreground some of the shops.
The drawing was glued on a cardboard, originally numbered 5.47, and kept in a portfolio. Title from note on the original cardboard. Forms part of: Library Collection. Drawings.
