Rome, the Palatine hill from the convent of St. Balbina
Hakewill, James, 1778-1843 (draftsman)
March 1817
1 drawing : graphite ; 13.9 x 21.4 cm.
This view from the little Aventine shows in the centre the substantial arches of the substructures of Septimius Severus. Above is the exhedra of Domitian overlooking his sunken stadium or garden, to the left are the remains of the Domus Augustana. In front of the hill there are various granaries and barns, spilling out on to the Circus Maximus. To the left is the Vallis Murcia, beyond the Palatine to the right of the exhedra are the Torre delle Milizie and the Quirinal.
The drawing was glued on a cardboard, originally numbered 3.18, and kept in a portfolio. Title from note on the original cardboard. Forms part of: Library Collection. Drawings.
