War Damage series

(1938-1947, bulk 1940-1946)

This series consists of more than 1,400 photographic prints taken or collected by J.B. Ward-Perkins in his capacity as Deputy Director and then Director of the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Sub-Commission (MFA&A S/C) in Italy to document damage to Italian monuments caused by bombing throughout Italy during World War II. Ward-Perkins secured a copy of these photographs and negatives for the BSR Archive. The Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Sub-Commission (MFA&A S/C), which included prominent Anglo-American museum directors, art historians, archaeologists and scholars wearing the army uniforms of their countries, was established not only to indicate the damage, loss, or survival of historic monuments and collections but also to create a complete photographic record of its activities in the field.
